Check out OpenCV, it has lot of cool features including the one that you are
looking for.
I am thinking of some application similar to Google Goggles, where you take
a picture of a species using your mobile and the application will give you
all the details about the species ( At least all the species belonging to
the same genus to start with, I have somewhat achieved this accuracy with my
algorithm in MATLAB) .

All the best with your CHMs.

Let me know if you need any technical support.
Mail me in a personal mail as I don't want to disturb the entire group which
is more interested in butterflies and not technical discussions.

Thanks and Regards,
Kishen
