Check out OpenCV, it has lot of cool features including the one that you are looking for. I am thinking of some application similar to Google Goggles, where you take a picture of a species using your mobile and the application will give you all the details about the species ( At least all the species belonging to the same genus to start with, I have somewhat achieved this accuracy with my algorithm in MATLAB) .
