I have photographed using flash and without flash from different angles to produce the same pattern that too on both sides of the wing and interestingly the blue colour spread gradually from both ends of the band of FW http://www.flickr.com/photos/balakrishnan_valappil/5131836964/ I observed the butterfly inside a room under artificial lighting so the colour is not a result of any form of polarisation, interference or refraction as all those phenomena depend on lightsource and angles of incidence I have seen and photographed specimens wet in Rain but no colour changes observed has anybody noticed the orange colour in museum specimen? it may be something connected with the physical changes of the scales of the wings when the blood is pumped in anyway it could be anything, a matter to be researched

It disappears as the wings get dried up !!! Has any of you seen this in older specimens? Kishen On Sat, Dec 18, 2010 at 8:00 PM, balakrishnan valappil <[email protected]> wrote: wow! Around 8:30 we spotted Malabar Banded Peacock resting on a shrub at 2.5 ft. As the sunlight fall on it, he opened the wings fully...we got surprised when we saw the colour of the wings on UP side...here is the series of colour pattern change photographed during 15 minutes... http://www.flickr.com/photos/9403...@n08/sets/72157625485332751/ Hope you will enjoy it...
