I think this is something inherited from our parents and teachers who
usually freak out at the sight of House Gecko or a Cockroach.
Many of our literature, movies and TV shows also refer to them as creepy,
crawly creatures creativng havoc.

Somehow my parents let me play with ants, beetles and caterpillars, since I
was a very small kid.

I remember so many little kids freely interacting ( Many of whom were
initially scared of insects ) with insects after our sessions on insects and
butterflies at nature camps.
More the knowledge, better the understanding, less is the fear.
