Dear Toshita, This is a hypothetical question. Earlier they used catch and identify. Of course now also you can do that with a permission for taxonomy study.
Otherwise in field trips with experience most of them are identified which has not got much variations, for example swallowtails. Since the digital photography has got the advantage of immediate check some more can be identified consulting the team mates. Then comes checking the photos with the available literature. Even then for some (Hesperiidae) require UN and UP wing photo. For sailors fully opened upper wings are important. There we require the experts advise, since they might have handled so many specimens during their taxonomy study. Finally some require only taxonomy study. Experience will lead to perfection. Even if we are not perfect our contribution is valuable. It is only an elderly advise. Two questions. Is it a Leaf Blue (Amblpodia anita)? When you make field trips how do you decide which butterfly is which?? Don't you need photos for that?? As I mentioned earlier, most of the species show great amount of individual , sex-related and seasonal variations. Please make more field visits and get used to these variations.
