Thanks, Krushnamegh.

This is really helpful. May be we can soon have this kind of information for
such other species also.

Should this info appear under the identification tab?

And I am looking forward to the 7th specimen also appearing on the page soon.

cheers -shyam ghate

Shyam, I have now prepared and uploaded a detailed key to distinguish between
Abisara chela and A. neophron. Many of the key distinguishing features marked
on my collage are not given in any books or papers, they are my insight into
how these two very similar species differ from each other. I recently figured
out these things based on the photos that various people have contributed to
the BOI website and also on the specimens in Harvard's Museum of Comparative
Zoology. Check out images ag949 and ag950 on both the species pages:

http://ifoundbutterflies.org/187-abisara/abisara-neophron

http://ifoundbutterflies.org/187-abisara/abisara-chela

These characters should enable you and others to distinguish between the two
species even when you have only the upper side or the underside view of the
wings. Check this out and let me know what you think.

BTW, now we have six specimens of Abisara chela (Spot Judy) represented on the
website, I guess that’s a good number for a presumed rare species. This covers
some individual variation, so this should be useful in the future. Thanks, all,
for contributing your images to this page.

With best wishes,

Krushnamegh.

Kishen,

Thanks . I guess in case of my photograph, the short tail has to be the
identifying mark as the spot is not visible (due to inadequate opening of the
wings).

  Dear Krushnamegh,

I have an image of the Spot Judy from Namdapha taken in the month of May.

Initially had id'd it as Tailed Judy but after Gaurav's post on FB checked it
again. So I guess it is not as rare as considered earlier.

  Hi all,

Here are two very similar species of Judies (Abisara): the Tailed Judy (Abisara
neophron):

http://ifoundbutterflies.org/187-abisara/abisara-neophron

And the Spot Judy (Abisara chela):

http://ifoundbutterflies.org/187-abisara/abisara-chela

Evans (1932) says the Spot Judy is very rare, Gaurav and I saw three in one
day. I guess we were in the right place in the right season. Animish Mandrekar
has recently photographed it at Eaglenest, his picture is also posted on the
above page.

With best wishes,

Krushnamegh.
