Subject: [ButterflyIndia] Butterfly Pics 2011

Hello All

My 3 Best Pics of 2011 are as follows

Blue Oak leaf taken on 11.12.2011 @ Ovalekar Wadi Thane:

After seeing this butterfly, i always wanted to photograph it and got a chance
when i visited the ovalekar wadi at thane. The story goes like this. Me and my
friends had spent hours at the ovalekar wadi and were about to leave, but
decided to take one final round to see if we could see anything special. And
there it was sitting majestically on one of the fruit baits happily sucking on
the rotting fruits. I went so crazy with joy, that i literally danced and then
settled down for clicking photos and  did not even realize how much i has
spent, until one of my friends mentioned that if we do not leave now we will
miss our bus back to pune!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quaker: taken on 10.11.2011 @ SharavathiKarnataka:

While on a walking trail with my friends, i spotted something white and small
sitting on a leaf high above the ground. As i neared i could see it a small
butterfly from the Lycaenidae family. Since i have very few photos from this
family i wanted to click it. But the problem was it was little bit high up and
needed a base to stand up and click it. What we did was we went and searched
for few huge rocks which were used as base, my friends supporting the rocks
instead of me as they were more worried about the rocks than me, then i climbed
on it and photographed it! and was very satisfied as the pic turned out to be
really good.

Malabar Tree Nymph: taken on 10.11.2011 @ SharavathiKarnataka:

During the same walking trail while returning, something huge just went
fluttering by and i chased it thinking it was a bird! But i was so thrilled to
find that it was one of southern western ghats endemic butterfly and i froze in
awe               (still getting goosebumps even as i write this!!) after
seeing the pure beauty and elegance with which it was flying around searching
for a suitable place to settle down. In the mean time i told my friends
u proceed ahead, i will come in a bit as everyone was tired. I had to wait for
a good long 10 minutes for it to settle down. Then what followed was something
magical, as it opened and closed its wings plenty of times showing me
its magnificent colours and beauty that i fell in love with it. The tree nymph
settled down perfectly and allowed me approach very close to it and i could
click on macro mode (i own a Canon PowershotSX120 IS) It did not even budge a
inch and i am very thankful for it.
Then suddenly i heard my friends voice calling for me frantically,
and realized that i had spent over an hour alone and my friends had come
searching for me, thinking i was lost, since the forest was a dense evergreen
forest!. Till date this my best sighting ever.

Hoping for many more such sightings.

Thank you
