Dear KK and Friends,
I was in field and couldnt check my mails.
As far as i know all the Cephrenes i saw and reared were well marked, though
occationally females were less marked. But i have not seen a fully unmarked
specimen in field. These sightings are interesting, this means more work!

Ashok, I assume that you forwarded this message to Kalesh, Rohan and I to get
the ID confirmation since neither of us responded to this email. I am copying
the ButterflyIndia group once again because those folks may also be wondering
about this. Kalesh has previously IDed similar skippers as female Plain Palm
Dart (Cephrenes acalle). But this does not match any pictures of that species
that I have seen online. I have asked Kalesh whether he has seen this
particular variation in the individuals that he has raised from caterpillars.
He is apparently in the field right now, I am sure he will get back to us about
this when he checks his email. In any case, this is something special, either
variation within the Plain Palm Dart population in southern India or may be
another species. I have not yet found time to look through the ID keys to check
this, although I did meet Rohit yesterday to talk about this butterfly. Let’s
wait to hear from Kalesh, and I will
also check on this when I am at NHM London.

With best regards,

Krushnamegh.
