Folks,

There is some good stuff here. I'm not encumbered with the TI sound chip,
so I do not have the need to reduce the audio to overcome the line vs. mic
issue. My current setup uses a high-end DAW sound "card", a Steinberg UR22.
This device has knobs to control input and output levels as well as 600 Ohm
line input impedance. It also supports sample rates up to 192K 24bit
stereo, so it is no slacker. Other features are there for DAW applications.

FYI, "DAW" is Digital Audio Workstation, usually used for recording and
mixing of music. Software ranges in price from "free" to over $1000.00. The
free one is "Audacity" available in the operating system of your choice,
and is actually a good program to have installed on your PC, Mac or Linux
box. You might find it useful to record off the air audio for analysis of
the signal.

I was already using the level meter, which I run a little hotter than what
was recommended in the videos (around -4dB, with the peak indicator set at
-1dB. I've learned that WSJT-X is a tolerant of an occasional excursion
into the brick wall, and often decode received signals at the -26dB level
out of Japan and Australia.

What was new to me and most welcome was the "oscilloscope" program. I could
clearly see the flat topping of the signals as I increased the input levels
beyond my usual settings.

Bottom line: In my case, I already had things pretty well optimized. Going
through the drill simply confirmed what I had already set up.

If you use any of the sound card modes, I encourage you to try this stuff
out. You may be surprised at the improvement you get.
