*Subject: : 2024 Houston Marathon – Request for Amateur Radio Volunteers
- Houston Marathon (January 14, 2024) - Amateur Radio Positions*

*Message Date: October 31, 2023*

*Dear BVARC Member,*

I thank each of you who has worked this event in prior years for your
contributions to the success of *the Chevron Houston Marathon*, the Aramco
Half Marathon, and the We Are Houston 5K race events as part of the Amateur
Radio Operations. I ask you to assist again in the 2024 events.

*If you have not participated in this public service event. Please consider
helping!*

*Amateur Radio Operators*, please volunteer for the 2024 Chevron Houston
Marathon and associated events during the weekend of January 13 & 14 2024. *It
is the Houston Marathon’s 52**nd** Year!*

§ *2024 Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Half-Marathon on SUNDAY,
January 14, 2024*

§ *We Are Houston 5K Run on Saturday, January 13, 2024*

The *2024 Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Half-Marathon (SUNDAY,
January 14, 2024)* needs the participation of *over* *150 Amateur Radio
Operators *and to *fully staff* positions and provide public service
communications and related race related operational support. On Saturday,
January 13, 2024, the *We Are Houston 5K Run* provides an opportunity to
test our radio equipment for Sunday and the event requires fewer operators.

This is the *52**nd** consecutive year for this event*. Amateur Radio
Operators are an integral part of the *Public Safety and race management
activities* to help assure the safety and welfare of the runners and an
uncounted number of spectators watching the race. This year, 30,000
participants, 7,000+ volunteers, and 250,000 spectators are expected.

*NOTE:** BOTH AMATEUR RADIO REGISTRATION WEBSITES ARE NEW FOR 2024. The
Main Houston Marathon Volunteer Registration Website is still being refined
and some inconsistencies may be encountered. I’ve delayed this invitation
while working through resolution. Thanks for your understanding!*

*Amateur Radio Operator Registration*

Note *“Amateur Radio Operator”* positions *do not show on the Houston
Marathon Volunteer* public site and *require a special access code of *
*Radio* on the regular volunteer page*. This “Radio” code is entered
in the “password” field on the Volunteer/ Shift application. *

*Please sign up as soon as you can, even though the event seems so far in
the future! * If you sign up promptly, you will make the administrative
processes smoother. I have learned by experience that the apparel order is
placed in late October. Additionally, you* will be part of the registrants
who will get apparel in the size you want and hence, most likely it will
fit you**!*

*Amateur Radio Operator volunteers must register at both the sites listed
below:*

   - *Houston Marathon’s Volunteer web site* to complete required legal
paperwork for the event, and to facilitate marathon interfaces for
   credentials and other matters:

https://houstonmarathoncommittee.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=73523&job_name=Amateur%20Radio%20Operator

*[You must Manually insert the **PASSWORD: Radio.** Click the “+” sign(s)
next to Amateur Radio Operator, Saturday, and Sunday to expand and display
registration shifts and options] *

   - *Houston Marathon Hams * www.hmhams.org web site to *provide pertinent
information for Amateur Radio Operator roles*.

Register on www.hmhams.org *Houston Marathon Hams’* web site to *provide
pertinent information for Amateur Radio Operator roles* by *click on the
LINK titled* “Click to register to help with the Houston Marathon or 5K” on
the hmhams.org webpage navigate to the “ham information” sign-up page.

The site enables one to volunteer by providing *Amateur Radio specific
information* required for a “ham” Houston Marathon assignment. This site
allows you to provide equipment details and to request specific assignments
or provide ham radio details not permitted by the official Marathon
Volunteer Hub web site. You will receive an email from the web site
thanking you and asking you to simply reply back to the hmhams.org website
email. This step ensures that your email allows emails from and to the
server. This is important when Amateur Radio related information is being
distributed later. The hmhams.org website includes instructions on how to
register with the Houston Marathon Volunteer web site for Amateur Radio
Operators*.*
