I will repeat what Sean stated, come out to one of the POTA events that happens
around the Houston area.   While there are several groups doing these I have
found that the (facebook group) Houston POTA group is the most active.  During
these POTA events you will be able to get on the air with the help of people
there.   You will also be able to try out different radios.    The next POTA
event is April 20th at Stephen F. Austin State Park which is west of Katy.
They normally run from 10am to 5 pm.   You dont have to bring anything, but a
chair and drinks for your self could be helpful.

 Kristan,
I understand and was once in your shoes when I first started. I know you said
it is hard for you to go to activities such as a planed POTA event. But I
encourage you to seek these gatherings because they are some of the best way to
get answers to your questions and a little hands on experience so you too will
become confident in your knowledge and ability. A few places to keep an eye out
for upcoming local park activations are Houston POTA, Cross Roads Ham Radio
Club, and Brazos Vally Amateur Radio Club. All these groups manage a Facebook
page that helps get the word out of organized POTA activations in our area.

Regards,
Sean - N5LNK

First, let me preface my request for help by saying that I am a Mechanical
Engineer and I still have no idea what is going on. I collect lots of data on
rotating and fixed equipment, and I understand Control systems just enough to
be dangerous.
That said, I have had my General license for almost a year, and I still have no
idea how to operate a ham radio, how to communicate with anyone or find
channels to communicate on. I freely admit that the amount of time that I spend
trying to learn is minimal, because of other priorities at the moment. I don’t
have any friends who are into ham, and I am rarely able to make BVARC functions
like the POTA.
How in the world do you get started if you don’t know where to begin?  Sorry, I
am just lost.
