| Mark, Welcome to the best phase in life. They call it retirement but, to me, that sounds too “terminal”, IMHO.
This phase, in my view, can best be described as undergrad without the exam pressure. LOL. In my particular case, I’m looking up cutting edge research in physics, along the lines of astrophysics, microwave physics, & radar systems.
Fascinating stuff!
Along the lines of social interactions which is critically important, when in the Houston area, I interact with BVARC folks at breakfast. Now that is fun and intellectually stimulating!
Also, for us w/a technical background may I suggest the art venues in Houston, e.g. the Houston Watercolor Society. Arguably a way to broaden horizons if you will.
So, along slightly tangential lines, travelling is currently one of our main interests. Case in point, I am writing these lines having a cold local brew at an outdoor cafe in Lima, Perú.

Mark, thank you. It's been a long road. I've been at my company a little over 40 years, 27.5 years in my current role. It's a high stress, long hour, high demanding job. And my commute is Sugar Land to the Woodlands and back every day, plus any field time. The people will be missed. But as I told my boss, I'm tired of waking up at 2 am to grab my glasses, turn on my cell phone, and make a note about something at work that woke me up.
My father retired at 65 and was dead shortly after his 68th b-day. I have always promised myself I'd retire before I turned 64, and enjoy my latter years. It's taken some planning to get here.
Strangely, everyone keeps asking me "Chuck, what's your PLAN"? I didn't realize I had to have a plan. I've had a plan every day for 40 years that usually aligned with the company's plan. So I have promised myself I will take through the end of the year "off". I want to learn to sleep again, be in the moment again, fish a little bit more, and hang out with my best friend every day....my dog Pepper.
I have several places that are already asking me to consult on some level, but I know I don't do anything unless I'm all in, and that's what I'm retiring from. So, for now, that's a no.
Thanks for your kind note, and thanks for listening. My dog listens, but I'm not sure she understands much more than "walk", "dinner", "pets", and "ride". LOL
Maybe someday we can grab a cup of coffee.
