Definitely fake. It has happened before, and will happen again. Someone also spoofed me, as Treasurer, a few months ago.
In this age of AI, we can't stop bad actors from trying to rip you off, and also publish our names on the website. Their approach is getting better, thanks to AI, and more believable. Your best defense is to be skeptical, never send anyone gift cards if they ask, and reach out like you did to alert others. If we, as a club, ask you to pay us, we'll post a link to the club website, BVARC.ORG, or the hamfest website, houstonhamfest.org. Then there will be a paypal link for your membership, or table rental, or admission tickets. We may do the same for the banquet. We're still working on the details for that.
