not really, when you can use find. I'd rather not have my users indexing 
everything, thus I didn't install it. But, who am I to argue. Apparently most 
of the distros that don't include it by default are just lazy.

  Rubbish. There are ways of restricting what it indexes/shows
  (--require-visibility for example.) Disabling it entirely is just lazy
  administration.
