Pff. You should have tried writing software for Windows 3.x (16-bit).
Or DOS. Or punchcards. The bad old days of programming. Kids these
days have it easy with all this 32-bit and 64-bit protected mode, flat
memory model fluffy-puffy goodness with nice shiny APIs. And then
complete that package with the Internet and groups like this.

You really do have it easy these days.

Microsoft, back around the Windows ME era, bought some company's product
for ZIP compression and decompression and then proceeded to integrate
some hacked up and cut-down version of that product into Explorer. They
also exposed a whole slew of APIs to developers (as is their habit)
should someone want to integrate the functionality into an application.

Windows has a vast, rich set of APIs, complete with VERY rich
documentation. Each Windows release typically adds several thousand new
APIs to do stuff with (although most are fairly esoteric these days and
aren't always very clear on what precisely they do).
