I have Vista, and I was actually ok with SQL Server 2008. The problem I had is it would not install with Visual Studio 2008 on the system. It said I needed to install an update for VS, but the update would not apply because I already had VS 2008 SP1 installed which already had the update in it. Basically, I had a circular dependency that was not resolvable. I was kinda drunk at the time so I just gave up.
