Pull the hard drive out of the enclosure and put it into the machine as a regular drive to rule out a faulty enclosure. Try the freezer trick if you have critical data on there (you said slave drive, so I assume that you mean this served as a backup drive of some sort - better than losing all your data on your primary drive).
