Gloridel,
you need to tell your compiler where the include folder is (by setting
the INCLUDE env, or add the -I option to the makefile) and where the lib
folder is (by setting the LIB env, or add the -Lfolder -lxerces-c option).
Also, I don;t know if your 5.9 compiler understands the library compiled
by the 5.7 version; you may need to download the sources and recompile
Xerces with the 5.9
