I also heard about TestMaker (at http://www.pushtotest.com/). The first chapter 
of the 
book by Frank Cohen hinted that it could be used for such things as web 
services 
tests.

        By functional testing tool, you mean along the lines of Jmeter?  My
        ideal is to put the webservice testing in as automated testing (through
        ant or maven).  I think Jmeter has some support for that, is that how
        some other people have done automated webservice testing?
