AFAIK the usual way isn't to guess how long it will take to come up, but to fire off a background timer as soon as possible in the startup process, and show the splash if the first window hasn't appeared within N seconds of the timer starting. (You also need to set a minimum duration that the splash screen should appear for, rather than just having it disappear when the first window appears... otherwise it might disappear moments after it appeared, which looks sloppy.)
