As of today the LiveCD image is the image of an installed system and as such has complete SVR4 packaging information. This entire image is transferred to harddisk (obviously including all of the metadata). With IPS this is most probably going to change. But I am not sure what the exact ramifications will be. AFAIK IPS will be able to import SVR4 packages.
