Talking to a sys admin/dhcp guru (Clay B), he said that this is the preferred way of setting up systems, certainly within sun. That is: to configure the systems as dhcp and to use a macro on the dhcp server to associate the mac address on the box with an IP address, and this reserves the IP address on the DHCP server so that it does not get reused by anyone else.
