What I meant by "external resources" in this case are being to
generate the image on some other machine/system/infrastrcture  How to "use"
that machine?  That's one design decision to make.  A web based
GUI is one possible solution.  There could be others, of course. What 
kind of
machine?  Another design decision.  You suggestion to use grid engine
is one design decision, there could also be others.
That's why I want use say "external resources" so that can consider
all the possibilities.
