Hi Paul, What were the commands you issued prior to shutting down/powering off the system? Also did you really power off the system or did you do "halt" or "init 5" or some other command?

You would think that if your are in maintenance mode or single user mode, it would skip all the pam crap, and revert to the plain old basic login scheme, like root and the root password ...
