I had a similar issue, it may be related to 7162039 or 7162553. I was
able to install from earlier media and pkg update, but the LiveCD was
failing. Others on this alias may be able to more better discuss this,
but I thought I'd share the CRs in case it looks like what you're seeing.

Hi folks,
I met a problem, there is nothing displayed on monitor when I try to
start the LIVECD ISO of S11U1B14 on physical machine.
In GRUB, select the option 1, "Oracle Solaris 11.1 B14".
Select default 47 for keyboard layout and default 3 for language.
After a while, the monitor displayed: D-SUB out of range. Then it go
to black....
If I select the option 2 "Oracle Solaris 11.1 B14 VESA driver" in
GRUB, the monitor go to black without anything displayed after the
same selection.
Who guys can help me to take a look on this issue?
The attachment is the output of command "prtconf -v". If you need more
information of hardware, please feel free to let me know.
By the way, the system can be started normally if I select the option
"text console" in GRUB.
