http://www.cakephp.org/pastes/show/abc17e6d6081dc7c2f91540668447d9f Using sub queries it should be possible to do just about anything - don't know if it's the 'best' idea but it certainly works, and permits constraints across the HABTM relationship (e.g. blog author_id = x, tags in (a,b,c)) You can also easily paginate the results should you require, as there's no call to the method query.
