Found the solution, not sure if it is the Cake way of doing it but it works. $conditions = array('YEAR(MonthlyReturn.month)' => $sel_year); <--- match by year only $conditions = array('MONTH(MonthlyReturn.month)' => $sel_month); <--- match by month only
