I actually like to mix the two. What I find best is to create an element, and put the rA() inside it. Then I can use element caching to speeding things up, and reduce the load.
Of course, you may find that when you update data on your site, these elements don't update right away - what you need to do is in your model, in the afterSave method is to use the PHP function unlink() and delete the cached element.
