How about request action (http://api.cakephp.org/ class_object.html#c40a38b60a3748b9cf75215b92ee3db1). There's a parameter that specifies if an action is being called by another page (though it's name escapes me at the moment). You could use that to send a different layout when it's inside another page. Also, check out elements (http://manual.cakephp.org/chapter/views), they have a very similar function.
