Thanks all. I stripped it all away (as suggested) and started from scratch and got it working. The problem with error messages seemed to be twofold. Firstly that logoutRedirect was actually causing a redirection on login, overriding loginRedirect. Strange.
Also, I was incorrectly using loginError, assuming that once you set that variable it would automatically render on an error.
