Thanks; I'm familiar with Jake (although I've always had problems
implementing it).

I'm not really looking to develop my new features inside the old code;
rather, I want to develop them in Cake without affecting the old
stuff.

My strategy will likely have to be to depend on mod_rewrite to send
requests for certain areas of the site through to a separate Cake
installation, and be careful to cover the various rewrite
possibilities correctly.
