I use a code very similar (ripped is more accurate) to the cake schema shell to do the table creation thing (using cake schemas instead of plain old sql), so its db vendor independent. However, to make the autocreation stuff, you must install your own error handler. Take a look into the manual, chapter 4.3 Error Handling.
