My bad. Try this:

$this->Recipe->find('all', array('conditions' => array(
  'OR' => array(
    'Recipe.name LIKE' => '%' . $item . '%',
    'Recipe.caption LIKE' => '%' . $item . '%'
  )
),
'order' => 'Recipe.name',
'recursive' => 1
)
);

Aso, set debug to 2 and look at the SELECT Cake is generating.
