Is 8MB much ... all depends on the functionality of the scripts. Personally I almost always need higher limits from the moment you start working with shells/scripts that consume lot's of data.
Seeing that you only read 2 records from the database I suspect there is some functionality inside the controller/view that consumes lot's of memory.
