If other people will have access to the ftp, then you can obscure your code by removing all linebreaks and whitespaces so it's difficult for humans to read (I'm sure you'll get a script for that somewhere). I've also heard that you can compile the php code into machine code... haven't done it before but maybe a search will turn up a tutorial or two on the subject.
