Oh I'm perfectly happy to inflict any and all penalties, performance and otherwise, on users who still use Internet Explorer, if it makes it easier for me to deal with my code. :) There's probably also a server-side way to handle this, by post-processing the rendered view and inserting non-breaking spaces or whatever into any empty cells.
