I'm going to go and guess that you're confused by CakePHP and what it is
capable of

To be able to pick up CakePHP easier you should have or obtain a basic
understanding of object orientated programming (Theory should be
sufficient). [1]

And then you should familiarise yourself with the MVC pattern [2]

Then I would try the Blog Tutorial [3]
