To follow up, it also fails even when using /Search for the ldap node.
But within the dscl cli tool, the search for the email address succeeds:
> search /Search dsAttrTypeNative:mail [email protected]
Users/sarah dsAttrTypeNative:mail = (
"[email protected]"
)
