yeah, depending on the # of places that need "protection", if-checking,
try-catch-wrapping, etc may be appropriate.
I just have no idea how many of these that we need. In my nightmares, it's a
bunch of places. In which case it might be easier to have strict- and
non-strict- versions of some of the modules.
