Cambodia was put under French protectorate in 1863.
After Norodom put Cambodia under the French Protectorate in 1863, the Siamese 
royal court agreed to let Norodom be crowned king. In 1864 Norodom was crowned, 
the coronation being supervised jointly by the French and Siamese officials. 
Nonetheless, the young king began his rule over a country in civil turmoil. The 
Siamese and the Vietnamese had traditionally treated Cambodia as a buffer 
state, but France encroached on both Siamese and Vietnamese territory. However, 
the country was weak and subject to the power struggles between France and 
Siam. Not only where there rebel groups intent on getting the Siamese and the 
Vietnamese out of Cambodia, but also bandit groups. At

1883 Charles Thomson is appointed governor to Cochinchina.  He is the French 
official with ultimate authority over Cambodia.

1884 The French administration in Cochin china takes over the collection of 
taxes on opium and alcohol sold in the Khmer kingdom.

 
June 17-24, 1884 France imposes a convention forcing King Norodom to accept 
administrative, judicial, finance and commercial reform, and direct control of 
the Khmer kingdom from France.  Also, the French Representative in Cambodia 
will be called Resident General.
 
1887 Cambodia and Vietnam (Cochinchina, Annam, and Tonkin) are administratively 
united as the Indochina Union.  Laos is added six years later. 
 
Oct. 17, 1887 France issues a decree placing Resident General in Cambodia under 
the authority of Governor General of Indochina.
 

Jan. 2, 1914 Cochinchina governor writes letter to Resident Superieur in 
Cambodia concerning maritime border between Cochinchina and Cambodia.
 
Dec. 4, 1940 Reports say 20 native policemen were killed in new native uprising 
in western Cochinchina during a lull in the fighting on the Indochinese-Thai 
border.

UN Passes Strong Resolution on Cambodia Human Rights Abuses 
Feb. 27, 1982 : UN Commission on Human Rights meeting in Geneva adopted a 
resolution condemning Vietnam��s occupation of Cambodia as a violation of 
Cambodian human rights. The vote was 28 in favor, 8 against, and 5 abstentions.
Oct. 21, 1986 The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution A/RES/41/6, by vote 
of 116-21 with 13 abstentions, calling for a withdrawal of Vietnamese forces 
from Cambodia
