Looting resources in the name of development.
Fourteen companies in the central highlands province of Gia Lai have set up 29
projects to transform 51,000 hectares of natural forest into rubber plantations.
Statistics show that a total of 86,000 forest hectares in Gia Lai and the
neighboring Dak Lak Province have been, or are being cleared for growing rubber
trees.
All these projects are being carried out at lighting speed with droves of
workers equipped with axes and chainsaws destroying trees in the region, even
those in primary forests.
It’s obvious that rubber trees bring a lot of benefit for the economy, being
one of the most profitable industrial crops in Vietnam but it’s also common
sense the trees cannot fulfill other tasks indispensible for our lives.
Forests’ trees cannot make money but they protect us from droughts, floods,
loss of groundwater and ecological imbalance.
We have a dangerous habit of exploiting anything that can bring instant profit
regardless of its aftermath, especially long-term impacts.
The consequences of large-scale deforestation, however, are very clear.
Droughts every year for the past 12 years in Dak Lak have caused losses of more
than VND8 trillion ($451.6 million) for local farmers, while floods in the same
period have killed 127 people, damaged houses and crops worth some VND1.4
trillion ($79 million), according to the provincial agency responsible for
disaster mitigation and flood and storm prevention.
Behind the situation also lies another truth. The region still contains 140,000
hectares of cleared land that can be planned as rubber plantations but no one
bothers to think about them.
So rubber trees are being used as an excuse to chop down forests for timber,
ensuring a dual benefit.
At this rate, our natural forests will be destroyed completely and it will be
too late for any redemption.
