Peace did not come without a price

Today we honor the countless number of soldiers who gave up their lives during
the major conflicts the nation was forced to enter for liberation and
reunification, and in self-defense.

It is probably only the former Soviet Union which has more war veterans and
martyrs than Vietnam.

It has been 62 years since Uncle Ho designated July 27 as the day to honor
those who had served or died during the war.
Since then, Vietnam has gone through great changes but the nation never forgets
for a minute the people who sacrificed their youth and their lives for the
nation’s independence.
Vietnam perhaps is also a few places in the world where mediums with telepathic
powers are sought most to find the remains of the fallen soldiers left behind
in every part of the country – from the northernmost point on the Lung Cu
Mountain peak in Ha Giang Province to the southernmost province of Ca Mau, from
the Truong Son Forest to the coastal areas of the East Sea.
Vietnam perhaps is also a few places in the world where almost in every town
you visit, every village you set foot on, there’s a cemetery dedicated to war
martyrs.
The government understands its responsibility to honor the soldiers, the war
veterans and their family members.
Each one of us has to remind ourselves that the peace we enjoy now came at a
price. A very heavy price.
