A WHO'S Who list of prominent South-east Asians of Chinese descent has been
compiled for the first time, in a book that gives an insight into the lives and
achievements of the men and women who have helped to shape the region.
Titled South-east Asian Personalities Of Chinese Descent, A Biographical
Dictionary, the 1,400-page tome features 608 people from 10 countries, all
well-known names from the past and present centuries. They include influential
personalities from various professions and fields, from statesmen, businessmen
and religious leaders to pop stars, artists and athletes.
Singapore has the most entries - 162 - including prime ministers Lee Kuan
Yew, Goh Chok Tong and Lee Hsien Loong; entertainers Dick Lee and Fann Wong;
eye
surgeon Arthur Lim; entrepreneur Sim Wong Woo; and Olympians Tan Howe Liang and
Jing Junhong.
Next is Indonesia, with names such as businessmen Soedono Salim - better
known as Liem Sioe Liong - and banker Mochtar Riady; followed by Malaysia, with
notables such as Malayan Communist Party leader Chin Peng, opposition
politician
Lim Kit Siang and badminton champ Lee Chong Wei.
The dictionary, which is in English, took 177 writers nearly six years to
complete, and is published jointly by the Chinese Heritage Centre (CHC) and the
Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Iseas). It was launched by
Ambassador-at-large Tommy Koh at the National Library yesterday.
Professor Koh, a former CHC chairman, said that identifying outstanding
ethnic Chinese would have proved to be a challenge, and recounted trying to get
a friend living in Thailand to be in the book.
"But he and his family are so well assimilated into mainstream Thai society
that when I asked him if they could be included in the dictionary, he said no,
because he felt he had lost his Chinese heritage and could no longer read and
write Chinese."
The idea for the book came from CHC's director Leo Suryadinata, who felt it
would be a useful resource for the study of ethnic Chinese outside China, 75
per
cent of whom live in South-east Asia.
"I cannot imagine a history of South-east Asia without mentioning the Chinese
and the role they played in each of the countries," he said.
The book has two volumes. The first contains the entries - each about 1,000
words describing the personality's background and contributions - and the
second, a glossary and index.
An international panel of advisers headed by Iseas chairman Wang Gungwu
helped in this task. Yesterday, Professor Wang said he hoped that it would
inspire younger generations of Chinese.
