Ieng Sary, the former minister of foreign
affairs<http://www.lemonde.fr/affaires-etrangeres/>
Cambodian regime of the Khmer Rouge, died Thursday, March 14, at the age
of 87 years. Former public face of totalitarian Marxist regime, responsible
for the deaths of nearly two million people, he was tried for genocide, war
crimes and crimes against humanity. He died * * *"After* * *

* * *was hospitalized on March 4, "said* Lars
Olsen<http://www.lemonde.fr/sujet/6bcb/lars-olsen.html>, a spokesman
for the court.
As Chief diplomacy <http://www.lemonde.fr/diplomatie/> , the intellectual
trained in France in the mythology of the 1789 revolution was often the
only point of contact between management particularly secret *"Democratic
Kampuchea"* and its few allies in the world, including
China<http://www.lemonde.fr/chine/>. More than thirty years after the
fall of the regime, it goes without
  have <http://conjugaison.lemonde.fr/conjugaison/auxiliaire/avoir> any
explanation given, nor responsibility, nor the operation of a device he
used almost to the end.
*NEAR POL POT*
The historians describe him as close to Pol
Pot<http://www.lemonde.fr/sujet/1246/pol-pot.html>, the
*"Brother Number One"* died in 1998 without
have<http://conjugaison.lemonde.fr/conjugaison/auxiliaire/avoir>
never been bothered by the courts. Sary had even married the sister of
the first wife of Pol Pot, Khieu Thirith some who become Ieng Thirith,
minister of social affairs, now more worried about the
justice<http://www.lemonde.fr/justice/>because of his dementia.
According to the researchers, Ieng Sary is one of
the few Khmer Rouge leaders to
have<http://conjugaison.lemonde.fr/conjugaison/auxiliaire/avoir>
provided public support for massive purges of the regime at the top of
his paranoia.
Some two million people died under the Khmer Rouge (1975-79) who, in the
name of ideology mixing communism and nationalism, emptied the cities in
favor of the countryside, forced labor imposed a
population<http://www.lemonde.fr/demographie/>terrorized and
systematically eliminated anyone suspected of opposition.
And though he is defended by, there is evidence that Ieng Sary *"encouraged,
repeatedly, arrests and executions"* suspected traitors, wrote Stephen
Heder and Brian Tittemore in a book devoted to this period. *"He
described publicly as any other responsible
authority<http://conjugaison.lemonde.fr/conjugaison/troisieme-groupe/pouvoir>
* * * *has never been the* * * *policy* <http://www.lemonde.fr/politique/> *

*"IT HAS PLAYED THEIR CARDS"*
Born in 1925 in South Vietnam <http://www.lemonde.fr/vietnam/> in a
family <http://www.lemonde.fr/famille/> small ethnic Khmer, Ieng Sary is
impregnated with ideas <http://www.lemonde.fr/idees/> revolutionary
during his studies in France. After
be<http://conjugaison.lemonde.fr/conjugaison/auxiliaire/avoir>married
to
Paris <http://www.lemonde.fr/paris/> in 1951, Khieu Thirith, high
intellectual Cambodian society, he returned to Phnom Penh and climbed the
ladder of Communist Party <http://www.lemonde.fr/parti-communiste/> . In
1963, Pol Pot and his qualified elements *"Subversive"* by the
authorities. They fled with their wives in the bush north of the country
where they develop their networks and prepare the big night.
In 1971, Ieng Sary <http://www.lemonde.fr/sujet/1182/ieng-sary.html> is
sent by the party in Beijing to win the support of King Norodom
Sihanouk<http://www.lemonde.fr/sujet/090b/norodom-sihanouk.html>,
overturned the previous year, in rebellion against the new
pro-American
regime installed Phnom
Penh<http://www.lemonde.fr/sujet/2e1d/phnom-penh.html>. He is
responsible for international relations within the party. And when
the Khmer Rouge took the
power<http://conjugaison.lemonde.fr/conjugaison/troisieme-groupe/pouvoir>in
Phnom Penh in 1975, he became Minister of Foreign Affairs. He
organizes
the return home of Cambodian diplomats pretext of rebuilding the country.
An operation that turns the purge and massacre of these officials, like all
intellectuals and bourgeois countries.
In 1979, the fall of the regime, he fled to

a crucial role between China and the Khmer Rouge rebels reverted. But
when the breath guerrilla and former comrades accused of
having<http://conjugaison.lemonde.fr/conjugaison/auxiliaire/avoir>
pocketed millions of dollars through illegal logging and gems, Ieng Sary
defected in 1996, two years before the death of Pol Pot. He obtained a
pardon Norodom Sihanouk again became king. And settled quietly in Phnom
Penh, in a relatively easy, before being arrested in November 2007.
*"He appreciated the revolution as it was a privileged member," said* David
Chandler <http://www.lemonde.fr/sujet/4d87/david-chandler.html> , a
historian of Cambodia <http://www.lemonde.fr/cambodge/> , describing a
camera man away from the intricacies of ideology. It *"Knew well before
the others what was being written, played his cards skillfully taken off

*MORE THAN TWO ACCUSED*
Fears were high that some long former regime officials die without
answering their role in this dark page of history. After the death of Ieng
Sary, there are only two accused in court

Phnom Penh, one of the four most senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime

*"Brother Number Two"* and ideologist of the regime, Nuon

Khieu Samphan is one of the few

Arrogant, provocative, Nuon Chea says n '

and the deputy direct *"Brother Number One"* Pol Pot. He justified the
