I highly recommend http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/ as a client and tie it into multiple gmail accounts that I use. It has great filtering capabilities -- I use it to manage many mailing lists and sort things into local folders for reading/managing offline -- and it runs well on Windows systems. My install on a Windows box was painless. If you're so inclined, you can theme it to your liking as it use GTK+....I like the Nodoka-Aqua theme :) And I believe you can even run it off of a thumb drive if needed :)
