Hi John,
I didn't know where you are located. The price is right for the
Omega F if it could be picked up and shipping charges eliminated. You
are right about the total cost of piece-it-together projects. I've
bought more than my share of items needing just a few parts (those parts
everyone else seems to be bidding on on eBay).
I haven't seen a Polaroid MP4 for quite some time, so I don't know
how it compares to the 4X5 Omega D as far as mounting an Omega F head.
I weighed my F head a few months ago and as I recall it was close to 30
pounds. I keep thinking that much weight spaced far enough from a 4X5
enlarger column for the head to fit will tend to twist to one side or
the other. However, some sort of bracing may solve that problem. Cables
running through ceiling mounted pulleys with counter weights to control
the F head weight is something I've considered.
I have a large Bencher copy stand that might become part of an 8X10
enlarger. I don't recall the model number, but I think it is the largest
model they make. It has a motorized lift, although it may not be up to
the weight of the F head. These show up on eBay now and then, but again,
the shipping cost will be bad. The really nice thing about it - it is
already sitting in the corner of my darkroom. I have bits and pieces of
an 8X10 Saltzman, but it will be a ship-in-a-bottle project to fit it in
my darkroom, so the Bencher looks much easier.
Do you know of a source for a wiring diagram for the F head/power
supply/fan/timer? I doubt the instruction manual includes a diagram, but
I've never seen a copy.
