I made something like this for a friend's 8x20 camera. I simply made a
carriage with dove tailed sliders--lubricated liberally with Lemon Pledge. I
used a 2' length of All-Thread (threaded rod) and a bronze nut sandwiched on
the carriage. a handle cobbled together with bolts and pvc pipe is the
crank. Works fine.
Usually the carriage is where the camera sits, but in the case of an 8x20
camera the bed of which is 2-3' long. I made the carriage (where the drive
nut sits) the tripod mount. This way the crank handle on the longer bed is
always in the same spot relative to the ground glass.

Depending on the format you won't need much length.
For an SLR 35mm you can probably simply make the slider rail and skip the
screw drive. The person with the old Omega enlarger will have the better
device because it was engineered to do exactly what you need. Baring taking
apart your enlarger, a wooden device should work fine.

I've got another design that I will make when I get the time. If I think of
the improvements I'll post them.
