Back in college I was the darkroom guy for the photo lab at the university. When I
graduated I lost access to the beautiful Bessler 45mx enlarger that I had been using
there and so I messed around with using my 4x5 camera and lens as an enlarger. Easy
enough by using a sheet of glass as a negative carrier but what lightsource? Well, on
a lark I setup my camera on a tripod with a negative and setup my computer behind it.
I draped the whole thing with towels and blankets till there was no light leaks. I
set focus on the wall (not easy since the camera was 5 feet away) and when happy I
taped some Kodak paper to the wall. I had written a program to make the screen black
until I hit a key and the go all white till I hit another. First results were bad
since I had the screen less than an inch from the negative (you could see the
scanlines in the print). After moving the screen back to about two inches the results
were amazing. I have an 11x14 I printed of a TMax100 negati!
ve that looks equal to the prints I made with the Bessler. With my 15 inch screen I
easily covered the 4x5 negative and the light was uniform. With a larger screen I bet
you could do the same with 8x10 negatives easily. Anyone else do something like this?
