If you want to try out a site where this issue is prevalent, you could use almost any product page from amazon.co.uk. Some pages show pound signs without problem, others, such as
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0563521082/ref=ed_art_541563_ri_1/
show a mix of properly displayed prices and erroneous ones, although Camino is inconsistent in choosing encodings for Amazon.co.uk page (they're all actually ISO Latin 1 (ISO-8859-1)) -- but then amazon.co.uk never declares any, either in the response headers or in <meta> tags.
Just for the record, Firecritter copes fine!
