Tucson GI gets medal for heroism
The road from Tucson to Baghdad has been a tough one for teenage soldier Christopher
Fernandez and his family. The Army has declared him a hero. But the honor barely eases
the hearts of loved ones praying for his safety. Fernandez, a 19-year-old newlywed and
new dad, received one of the nation's highest honors for combat bravery Friday when a
two-star general pinned a Silver Star on his chest.

Stanford 9s show little progress
Six Pima County public school districts performed below the state average on Stanford
9 test scores, which were released publicly yesterday. The county as a whole remained
in a holding pattern with average scores lower than Maricopa County and Arizona in
reading, language and math. Check out our searchable database of Stanford 9 scores for

PHOENIX - Ralph Nader filed suit yesterday to put his name on the November

Fibro what?? Diagnosis difficult, symptoms wide-ranging, but pain real with
fibromyalgia
Linda Ulen was not ready to retire at 50, but her body had other plans. A crime scene
investigator with the sheriff's department, Ulen could practically set her watch by
the pain that came to visit every day. Every afternoon, she felt achy all over like
she was getting the flu. She felt exhausted, like she couldn't get enough rest. She
went to several doctors, who basically told her the pain was in her head.

Nice versus nasty: Cats' 260-pound defensive end smiles, hits back
Marcus Smith has received a bad rap, and it is all his own fault. The UA's
6-foot-4-inch, 260-pound defensive end just cannot seem to shake the notion that he is
too nice a guy to be the mean, intimidating force the Wildcats need to anchor the
front line of their revamped defense.
