The Case for Baseline

Since we launched Baseline back in October 2001, we've
researched, reported and written about more than 125
real-life cases on how companies and other organizations try
to use technology to improve business and operations. Some
companies have succeeded; others have not. And we've told
those stories, warts and all.

With Baseline's third anniversary approaching, I would like
to bring to your attention more recent examples of our
in-depth work. And I'd like to hear your thoughts on what
you find most valuable, and why.

In "Shots in the Dark," Baseline Executive Editor John
McCormick and Senior Writer Deborah Gage examine how one
hospital set out to establish a system to electronically
record patient treatments and order drugs. With politicians
in Washington now clamoring for a national electronic
health-records system, our report is a timely look at some
of the challenges other health-care facilities can expect to
encounter in coming months and years. It also raises the
question: Will the arrival of electronic systems for
ordering drugs and keeping records really eliminate errors
that affect patients' lives? Tell us what you think at

A year ago, Procter & Gamble's decision to outsource
technology services to Hewlett-Packard generated a lot of
attention. Baseline News Editor Larry Dignan checked back
with P&G to see how the contract is going. You might be
surprised by what he found: P&G has moved slowly, even at
the expense of delaying savings. To read more, go to "Slow
Speed Ahead." And let us know what you think at

Is your company paying too much for supplies, or worse,
doesn't have a way to analyze spending patterns? Then you
might want to read Baseline Community Editor Todd Spangler's
report on supplier-relationship management software. Which
approach suits your company to improve purchasing habits:
using software from a smaller specialty software maker, or a
package from an enterprise resource planning vendor? Let us
know at mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

These are just three examples of the kind of comprehensive
reportage done by Baseline that is supported by real-life
examples and real quantification of goals, results and
returns.

I'd love to hear what you think of any piece that has run in
Baseline that has struck you as particularly useful or
important -- and why. I'd also like to know what you think
of Baseline overall. And what you would like to see more of
in the magazine.
